Topic: Development of Isoflavone-rich Soybeans: A New Value Added Product for Ontario Producers*
Funding: $15,000
Research Details: This research has been set out to achieve a better knowledge base that will help to produce soybeans with high isoflavone levels. The three objectives are listed below:
1.) Determine the mode of inheritance and map the genes that determine the concentrations of specific isoflavones and the overall isoflavone content in soybeans.
2.) Develop markers that will enable more economic breeding of high isoflavone soybeans.
3.) Determine the relationship between the levels of isoflavone in the leaves and in the seeds.
The soybeans were screened for white mould and phytophthora resistance and the variation in response suggest isoflavone has a role as disease resistance. Multiply other advancement has been made in 2002’s research. Ontario Soybean Growers have funded this research as an attempt to the give to expand the Ontario grower’s markets through the development of soybean varieties that target niche markets.
