RESEARCH ARTICLES/INFORMATION

Research Category: Soybean Disease and Insect Control
Year: 2002
Researcher: M. Sears P. Pauls
Institution: U of Guelph
Topic: Integrated management of emerging field crop pests
Funding: $15,000
Research Details: The research will develop management strategies for various field crop pests that affect the corn, wheat and soybean crops. Soybean aphids and western corn rootworm (WCR) are of particular interest to soybean producers. It is thought that crop rotations from corn to soybeans forced the WCR to adapt to the soybean crop to an extent that the pest now prefers soybeans. Molecular tools have been developed to determine differences in worms. The movement of WCR will be studied along with the relationship to the environment. This data will help to predict the risk of WCR infection in Ontario. Soybean aphids were estimated to have cost soybean producers over $50 million in 2001. There is only one insecticide registered for use in Ontario at this time. Very little is known about the insecticide’s efficiency and its economic impact on the crop. This research is intended to determine the unknowns and present best management practices by the time its finished. Ontario Soybean Growers expect this research will help Ontario growers to make informed decisions that produce the highest possible revenues.
