Topic: A Co-ordinated Approach to the Development of Soybean Varieties/Germplasm and Improved Breeding Methodology to Enhance Producer Competitiveness and Market Development.
Funding: $120,000
Research Details: The objective of this research is to develop soybean varieties and improved breeding methodology. Overall significant progress was made on a number of areas of importance to soybean producers and to the industry in Ontario. Fifteen new improved soybean varieties from the University of Guelph breeding program, ranging in maturity from 2500 CHU to 3200 CHU, have been developed and released to the industry over the last two years. Acreage grown to these varieties will increase in the next 3-5 years. In addition, advances in pest resistance traits including soybean cyst nematode and white mould, seed quality traits including modified oils and isoflavones and in enhancing genetic diversity were made. Ontario Soybean Growers have funded this research with the expectation that producer competitiveness will be enhanced.
