News Release: Lambton couple to represent Canada as Dupont Young Leaders

GUELPH, ON – OSG congratulates Jeff & Teresa Shea, of Watford, Ontario, on being selected 2006 Dupont Young Leaders. The couple leaves next month for Anaheim, California to participate in an intense leadership-training program with other Young Leader representatives from across the United States.

Early in his career, Jeff took advantage of hands-on learning opportunities throughout the Southern United States instead of pursuing a formal education in agriculture. He credits that experience, along with the opportunity to attend a “Young Farmers of the World” conference in Florida, for his positive outlook on farming.

“Farming is part of our heritage – it’s at the root of our rural communities, it’s a huge contributor to our economy, and we have a responsibility to do our best to maximize profits from every acre,” says Jeff. “We also have a responsibility to maintain connections with urban populations and help them understand the importance of farming to our economy, the environment, and our history.”

Jeff & Teresa farm with Jeff’s parents on 1,150 acres of land in Lambton county. Teresa, who has recently relocated to Watford to join her husband on the family farm, is active in becoming part of a new community.

“I also grew up on a family farm, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to share experiences with other farm couples from across the United States,” says Teresa. “It’s interesting to learn about the challenges others face and the innovative ways they meet them.”

The couple will represent Canada when they attend the two-part leadership skills training program that leads up to the Commodity Classic in February. The second portion will take place in Iowa.

The Young Leader Program began in 1984 to recognize extraordinary leadership in agriculture. Winners are selected by a committee consisting of OSG representatives.

In addition to the two trips, the couple will receive 50 acres of a Dupont corn or soybean product of their choice. Two runner-up prizes of 50 acres of a Dupont corn or soybean product of choice were awarded to Andrew MacLeod & Heather Bee of Thamesville, Ontario, and Frank Seitz and Nicole Porquet of Lowbanks, Ontario. Applications for the 2007 Young Leader program will be accepted in Fall 2006.
